Set in a small town in Sri Lanka, the story is centered around the pachagaha - an ancient tree - and the crows which have made their homes there. The narrative is anecdotally related, using the tree as a literary mechanism for drawing the disparate characters together, and slowly revealing their interrelated lives. The text is replete with religious and literary allusions, from both western and eastern cultures, and is self referential in the style of much postmodern fiction. The dialogue between the authors idiosyncratic characters is fast-paced, witty and cleverly constructed.This is an intelligent novel, related by a wryly comic authorial voice with a satirical edge, that considers the themes of community and social division. It has been carefully Grafted so that the narrative functions on many levels, imbuing the text with multiple layers of meaning.This is an absorbing and funny work.
